Alaska's Need for Qualified Professionals is Growing

As the need for a skilled workforce in Alaska increases so has the demand for professional trainers increased.  There is high demand for professional trainers with career experience in such fields as telecommunications, banking, construction, medical and automotive.  Alaska Vocational Technical Center (AVTEC) –has formed a partnership with Alaska Pacific University (APU) in offering an Associate of Arts Degree in Career and Technical Education, so that educational professionals and those who seek to become vocational educators can conveniently obtain the credential they need to advance their career.

Foundations of Career and Technical Education (CTE101)

This course provides the student an introduction to the field of career and technical education by covering the history of CTE, the theorems related to CTE, inter-disciplinary nature of CTE and the implications for CTE.  The student will also learn the principles and basic techniques to work cooperatively with those in the career education.  The student will build an initial portfolio documenting their educational background and project their goals in relation to CTE.

Methods of Instruction (CTE102)

Students will learn the concepts of adult learning and how different learning and teaching styles impact the success of adult learners.  A systems approach to developing course curriculum and lesson planning will be presented.  Students will learn how to properly present lectures in a classroom environment as well as proper demonstration-performance techniques when presenting in a laboratory environment.

Curriculum Development (CTE201)

A more comprehensive view of CTE is introduced during this course requiring the student to discuss and relate CTE to their career.  The student will learn how to develop a course of study based on competency based objectives.  The student will develop units of instruction, create lesson plans, select and prepare instructional materials, and determine the best delivery methods for a course of instruction.

Project Planning and Management (CTE202)

Students will review the role of the project manager and project management standards as they relate to CTE.  A structured method of identifying and selecting appropriate solutions to problems will be presented.  The student will also learn how to define the scope and objectives to a project as well as develop strategies, task list, and formal project specifications.  Methods on tracking, reporting, and closing out projects will be presented.

Workplace Safety (CTE203)

The student will be presented with best practices in workplace safety and the function of OSHA in the workplace.  Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and its use will be presented with the student demonstrating the proper use of PPE.  The importance and proper use of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) will be covered with the student demonstrating the use of MSDS and understanding of terms when dealing with hazardous materials.  The functions of emergency response teams and Hazwoper will be presented.

Internet and Computing Core (CTE204)

An introduction computer hardware, software, and essential computer skills will be covered during this course of instruction.  Students will learn how to use technology to problem solve and the importance of security, privacy and ethics in an on-line environment.  The essentials of Microsoft Office will be taught with the student demonstrating their knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software functions.

Instructional Technology (CTE205)

The student will explore the role that Course Management Systems (CMS) have with emphasis placed on its use in distance education.  The student will demonstrate the proper delivery of content and use of CMS in setting up courses.  The student will also demonstrate the proper use and practices of Internet based distance education and Voice Over IP software to provide courses to distance learners.

Internship I / II (CTE206 / CTE207)

The student will apply the principles of course development by developing and presenting five units of instruction over a 12 to 15 week period on subjects in their current curriculum.  The units of instruction will be presented at a minimum of 20 hours per week.  The student’s presentations will be evaluated by their Advisor / Supervisor on a monthly basis with the student keeping a weekly journal of observations.  A workbook module will be completed with the Advisor / Supervisor selecting the workbook content.

Video Production for CTE Educators (CTE215)


Introduction to Video Production for Career & Technical Educators This course will provide educators with the basic skills needed to create professional marketing and training videos for their programs. Participants will utilize a digital still, video, basic lighting set up, a Macintosh computer and the iLife 08 application suite to accomplish this task. The training is divided into three modules: Pre-Production, Production & Post Production. Best practices of Video Techniques will be integrated throughout.

To enroll in the Methods of Instruction (CTE-102) course regardless of accreditation preference, you will need to enroll using our online registration form -OR- print out the and complete the paper version to be mailed to AVTEC admissions.

If you are interested in any other CTE courses yet do not wish to enroll for APU credits, then you will need to enroll through AVTEC's online registration form -OR- print out the and complete the paper version to be mailed to AVTEC admissions.
